The History of the Ram Series

Ram trucks weren't always known as "Ram." For those who are old enough to remember, there was a time when Ram was just a nameplate for Dodge and Chrysler. They released these under the Dodge name as far back as the Dodge Brothers Canopy Truck put out in 1925.

Dodge became associated with the name "Ram" because the brand started using a ram hood ornament on its trucks in the 1930s. By 1981, Dodge began to sell their trucks as "Dodge Ram," with its full-size, half-ton truck designated the Dodge Ram D150. The heavy-duty models received the names Dodge Ram D250 and D350. These would be changed to the Dodge Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500 in 1994 for the second generation, and the numbers would stick from then on.

Dodge would, however, play around with the names of its various cab designs. The two-door was always called a Regular Cab, but the two-row model with two doors was called an Extended Cab for the first generation and a Club Cab for the second generation. Meanwhile, the four-door model would go from being called a Crew Cab with the first generation to a Quad Cab for the second. By the third generation of these trucks in 2002, the names would change again, with the Club Cab getting an extra set of doors and becoming the Quad Cab, while the Crew Cab design was changed again to the Mega Cab. Still, bigger changes were in store for the Dodge Ram trucks for the fourth generation.

In 2009, a decision was made to spin Ram off from Dodge so that the division could focus solely on building great trucks, hence why all the trucks built from the fourth generation onward are known as Ram 1500, Ram 2500, and Ram 3500. Now with its own set of engineers and designers, the sky became the limit...

The Ram 1500 began to offer drivers a choice of V6 and V8 gas engines, as well as an EcoDiesel option for folks who want more torque and better overall fuel economy. At the same time, the Ram 2500 and 3500 came equipped with a choice of HEMI V8 and Cummins diesel engine options. The goal throughout was to ensure drivers could choose the engine and cab style that suited them best.

Speaking of, Ram finally settled on names for each of its cab designs. The two-door cab remained the Regular Cab, while the larger of the two four-door cabs became the Crew Cab, and the one with half-sized rear doors became the Quad Cab. As for the Mega Cab, that was limited to the heavy-duty Ram 2500 and 3500 models and connoted a cab with greater rear-seat legroom than can be found on a Crew Cab.

The fifth generation of the Ram lineup started with the 2019 model year. The Ram 2500 and 3500 saw a stiffer frame and more rugged design, which provided for greater towing and hauling capacity than in prior generations. Ram also continued to offer the choice of a HEMI V8 and a Cummins turbo-diesel engine, with drivers also offering a Regular Cab, Crew Cab, or Mega Cab on their heavy-duty Ram truck. However, the Ram 1500 was now only offered with a choice of a Quad Cab and a Crew Cab. In addition, Ram began offering the 1500 truck based on the fourth-generation design under the name "Ram 1500 Classic."

If you see this designation on a Ram truck, you should keep in mind that this model is actually a fourth-generation Ram 1500 truck. The good thing about the Ram 1500 Classic is you can get a new Ram truck for less money than a comparable fifth-generation model; this is helpful to drivers who are looking to use their Ram truck primarily for work.

Ram Trucks Can Do It All

Kingston drivers appreciate versatility-being able to tow boats and recreation vehicles, haul heavy cargo in the payload bed, tackle rugged terrain and extreme weather, and all the while provide a comfortable ride.

The key to Ram's trucks is in their design, and making Ram a separate brand was critical to this. Where every other major manufacturer also builds other vehicles like sedans and SUVs, the folks at Ram have only one job: making sure they build the most rugged, dependable, and versatile trucks on the road today. Whether you buy a Ram 1500, 2500, or 3500, you are getting a pickup truck designed by experts who focus on building trucks. This results in a series of full-size and heavy-duty trucks that are among the most capable of towing and hauling.

What's more, Ram always gives you a great choice of trims. Some are more utilitarian, like the Tradesman; these are perfect for people looking to use their Ram trucks primarily for work. There is also the Rebel, a four-wheel drive standard pickup truck with special features that improve the truck's off-road capability. Ram also offers luxury trims, such as the Limited and Limited Longhorn; these trucks feature leather seats, comfort and convenience items, and the latest infotainment interfaces with an advanced audio system.
